The College of Chemistry and Material Science, formerly known as the College of Science which was established in 1999, became independent in 2002. It sets up departments of Applied Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Fundamental Chemistry, and Chemistry Experiment & Education Center. There are currently undergraduate majors of Applied Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, and Pharmaceutical Engineering, among which Applied Chemistry and Materials Chemistry are first-class majors in Shandong Province. The college has authorized programs for master's degrees in chemistry and materials and chemical engineering, and it collaborates with multiple universities to cultivate doctoral students. The chemistry discipline entered the top 1% of ESI globally in May 2019, making it the third ESI top 1% discipline at Shandong Agricultural University.
The college currently has 93 faculty members, including 71 full-time teachers, 20 professors, 30 associate professors, and 3 senior experimenters. 35% of them have overseas education or work experience. There are currently 6 doctoral supervisors and 46 master's supervisors; One national talent, one Taishan industry leader, one young & middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions in Shandong Province, one in western talent plan, and one Taishan young scholar; Four Shandong Province Youth Entrepreneurship Teams. Currently, there are 690 undergraduate students and 118 graduate students on campus. The proportion of undergraduate graduates pursuing postgraduate studies in 2023 is 63.34% (higher than 56.93% from Double First-Class universities), and the proportion of master's graduates pursuing doctoral study is 20%; The employment rate of graduates ranks first in the school.
The college currently has five provincial and ministerial level scientific research platforms, including the Key Laboratory of Agricultural Film Application of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Key Laboratory of Low Carbon and Green Agriculture of Shandong Province Universities, and the Shandong Food Safety Analysis and Testing Engineering Technology Center. It has jointly built the Carbon Chemistry Laboratory with Shandong Jingbo Holding Group and possesses advanced analytical and testing equipment.
The college has one national first-class course, four Shandong Provincial boutique courses, and one Shandong Provincial course ideological and political demonstration course; Two courses were selected as online open courses in higher education institutions in Shandong Province; 21 textbooks have been published, and 14 textbooks have been awarded honors such as National Excellent Agricultural Education Textbook and Shandong Province First Class General Higher Education Textbook. Since the 14th Five Year Plan period, 40 teaching and research projects have been approved, and one first prize for teaching achievements in Shandong Province has been won.
The college attaches great importance to theoretical and applied research. Since the 14th Five Year Plan period, the college has undertaken 58 scientific research projects at all levels, including national key program projects and National Natural Science Foundation projects, with a total project budget of over 35 million yuan; Obtained over 20 national invention patents, transformed 12 achievements, and published 210 high-quality academic papers.
The college is oriented towards the needs of national strategic development and regional economic development, relying on the advantages of the school's agriculture, forestry, and life sciences. With the concept of “chemistry+” integrated development, it focuses on conducting research on agricultural analysis, chemical biology, agricultural materials, green energy, green synthesis, etc., cultivating high-quality innovative talents, and building a high-level innovation base in interdisciplinary fields.
